9月9日は重陽（ちょうよう）と呼ばれる菊の節句でした。奇数の重なる月日の中でも最も9が不吉とされ邪気を払う為、菊を飾ったり菊の花を浮かべた酒を飲んだそうです。後、転じてめでたい兆しとし祝い事になったそうです。

September 9th was a festival of chrysanthemum called Chong Yang. It is said that people decorated with chrysanthemums and drank sake with chrysanthemum flowers on it to ward off evil spirits. Later, it was turned into a celebratory event as a sign of good fortune.
